Loony Looming

Santa brought me the Knifty Knitter looms (both the round ones and the long looms) for Christmas along with some nice homespun yarn, so I've been getting in touch with my crafty side. For my first attempt, I went with the basic hat pattern that comes with the round looms. A couple of hours winding yarn around the little blue loom, and I had this:

Mommy thinks I have a small head

Unfortunately in my haste to finish my very first project, I didn't make it quite long enough to fit on the little man's head, but even so, I was impressed. I was inspired. I wanted to make more.

...But, I didn't want to fill the apartment with identical blue hats, so I did the only logical thing, and went poking around on the internet for more patterns. I found this one and thought it was cute. Although at present I only have blue yarn, so the bumble bee striping was out, but I was more interested in the earflaps and ties anyway. A hat that ties on is probably more likely to stay on a squirmy baby head. ;) So, here is what we ended up with:

Okay, now she's just trying to make me look silly!

This time I used the red loom and the hat is a bit big for him, which is fine. Maybe he can use it next winter too. (If I haven't made him several more by then!) It took me 4 or 5 tries to get the first cord and earflap looking decent, and I'm not totally satisfied with how the earflaps came out, so I'll have to practice a little more to get them right. But overall, not bad for a first try. :) I think the next time I make this hat I'll use a contrasting yarn for the flaps and maybe add a bobble on top too. It's a cute pattern.

I think the next thing I'm going to do is pull out the long looms and try making a matching scarf, and after that perhaps a baby blanket. Not to mention, eventually I'm going to make John's Christmas stocking! There are lots of free patterns to mess with and new stitches to try (and my mom has promised me a whole bunch of yarn that's just taking up space at her house right now), so this should keep me busy for a while. It's neat to join the world of people who can actually make stuff, and good timing too. Lots of babies coming this year that will need blankets and hats! :)

I'm too darn cute, and you know it!
