The solution to being happy has nothing to do with getting everything you want as quickly as possible. Getting married will not make you happy, no matter how much you love each other. Having a baby will not make you happy, no matter how much you look forward to having one. Buying a house will not make you happy. Neither will a better job, a new car, the perfect place to live, a lot of friends, your dream vacation, quitting your job, becoming a hermit, the winning lottery ticket, or a girlfriend.
My favorite quote about happiness:
The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.Let's start at the top.
~Allan K. Chalmers
Something to do. This is how you spend your time. It is your job, your hobbies, your volunteer work, your time spent at home, at church, at work, at play, at prayer. Everyone has something to do.
Something to love. This is the person for whom you do what you do. This is God. It is your husband, your wife, your children, your parents, your dog, your friends, the people around you. Everyone has something to love.
Something to hope for. This is what you hope to accomplish by doing what you are doing. It is heaven. It is every goal and every dream you have ever had. Everyone has something to hope for.
These are the essential elements of happiness, and everyone has them. Everyone has ALL of them, so why isn't everyone happy? I'll tell you a secret.
Happiness is a choice.
Nothing can or will make you happy except yourself. You have to consciously choose it. You have to look at all the things you have and say they're enough. You have to look at your boyfriend and realize he's exactly the same person he would be if he were your husband, and say that's enough. You have to look at your job and realize your child's life depends on the money you earn there, and say that's enough. You have to look at your house and realize it is a safe place for your family to come home to, and say that's enough. You have to look at the bright side of every single thing in your life, and say it's enough. When you can do this, you will be happy. But you're the only person who can do it.
Happiness is a choice. You have to make yourself choose it. Sometimes it really takes a lot of effort, but you can do it. You CAN do it. So do it. Be happy.
Nobody likes to hear you complain. Nobody likes hearing you complain about things you don't have when you're not putting in any effort to try and get them. Nobody likes hearing you complain about things you don't have and then, once you've gotten exactly what you want, hearing you complain about whatever it was you wanted so badly in the first place. So stop complaining. When you choose to be happy, you have nothing to complain about. So be happy. If you want so badly to be happy, then BE HAPPY.
Happiness is a choice. The sooner you learn this, the better off you will be.
