Intelligent Life

It is amazing how quickly things (and by that I mean babies) change sometimes. We (all three of us) spent last week visiting my Gram and taking care of my parents' dog while they're in Hawaii. Which was a lot of fun, by the way: I got more calls while I was there than I ever seem to get at home, and had the chance to visit a lot of people that I haven't seen in a long time. Including the kids I used to babysit for, all of whom have grown up in my absence. Why do they do that? But I digress; this post was supposed to be about my own growing-up-too-quickly child. :)

Little amazing feats that our brilliant son has done lately:

- After opening part of a belated Christmas gift from the aforementioned kids, which was a battery-operated candle, we explained to John that at Christmastime you put candles in the windows. John immediately pointed to the window (and said... "Dat!" What else?) and walked over to it.

- Great-Grandma has lots of interesting plants in her apartment. In one of the pots she has also "planted" some little plastic flowers (that John loves to pull out of the dirt, given the opportunity). On the last day of our visit, John was playing with some of Great-Grandma's teddy bears and suddenly started trying to put one of the bears into one of her plants. I was mystified by this until Aunt Dotty pointed out that this particular bear was wearing a little hat with a flower on it that looked an awful lot like the flowers in the other pot!

- When we returned home, John went to his toy box, opened the lid by himself, took something out, and closed the lid again. Which isn't really all that impressive, but I've never seen him do it before.

- Shortly thereafter, I asked him if he would like to go outside. He made a beeline for the door and started pounding on it. That evening when we told him it was bath time, he went straight into the bathroom and stood by the tub!

- Yesterday while Grandma was holding him, John picked up her glasses (which she usually wears on a cord around her neck) and tried to put them on her face.

- This morning he opened our pantry cupboard, rifled around for awhile, came up with his bottle, and closed the cupboard again.

- Lately every time we take his picture, he totally hams it up for the camera. Huge toothy smile, crinkle face, the whole bit. Hilarious.

It just amazes me how he is starting to put things together. A year ago today was Easter, I was huge, and John was our mysterious kicking, hiccuping Bumble. We were headed into the final week before his grand entrance and the beginning of this awesome ride. (Yes, motherhood and the whole journey really begins at conception, but birth is a whole new beginning. Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.) Now he's this amazing little person who wants to see and touch and do and know everything. "Dat! Dat! Dis?" Mmm, I could just eat him up.
