Chatterbox

The other day I was forced to admit that it was time to fill in the blank in John's baby book for First Words. He says "Dada", "cat" (although he doesn't always make the "c" sound), and "that" (dat) which means "what's that?" and accompanies a pointing finger. He also says "Ash" for Asher the cat (and there's still the high-pitched squeal that invariably means the cat has been sighted). He has said "Mama" or "nana" a couple of times but not with any real frequency yet. We hear "duck-a-duck-a" quite often too, and we're trying to figure out what "ott" means. At any rate, it is a cute and fun new world of sounds and curiosity. John wants to know what everything is.

He seems to feel that he has mastered going up steps now, so now he wants to try going down. Which I'm not keen on.

Tonight John is sporting a goose egg on his forehead and a scrape under his nose after taking a tumble outside this afternoon. I still wonder whether I should get him a helmet. Between his bumps and my red spot where John poked me in the eye the other day, we are quite a sight around here.

On Friday Joe and I went out to the hockey game -- first hockey game I've seen all season, actually. It was also our first time going out just-the-two-of-us (you know, if you don't count the other 18,000 hockey fans in the arena) in over 10 months. The Sabres were even nice enough to win for us.
