Random Naming Post

I'm not obsessed but I do (still) think names are rather fascinating. I went for a few months without really reading the BabyNames.com boards at all, but lately I'm finding myself occasionally flipping back to it again. I think this is because so many people have been/will be having (and naming) babies in recent/coming months. On top of that, dipping a toe into the world of D&D means I'll have to name my characters, which Joe assures me is a very important thing, so... anyway needless to say, I'm back in the swirl of the name game again. Names are cool. Hooray for useless hobbies. ;)

So, here's a little survey-thingy I pulled off the boards to fill out, since I haven't written anything else interesting up here recently. ;)

1. Five BOY names you love?

Caleb, Isaac, Samuel, Micah, William (Notice a trend toward Old Testament names. :P)

2. Five girls names you love?

Anna, Amelia, Clara, Agatha, Mary (Notice how most of my favorite girl names end in 'a'. And begin with 'A' for that matter... :P)

3. Five names you can't use for some reason?

I think Ryan is the only name I absolutely cannot and would not use for my child, for obvious reasons. Pretty much anything else would be up for debate. :P

4. Five names you wouldn't use, for any reason?

Joseph [as a first name] because I don't want a junior, Noah because my sister likes that (although she said she's never having kids), Cate because I know too many, Asher because it is the cat's name, and a number of names because I just can't stand them: Madison, Makenzie, Kayla/Kaylee, anything beginning with Alex-, Taylor, Jordan, etc...

5. Favorite names you think others would dislike?

Agatha, Ainsley, Bronwen, Iantha (my great-grandmother's middle name), Frances (for a girl), Henry, and I still like the combo Clara Qat even though 'Qat' is a Scrabble word rather than a name

6. Favorite combos from others on the board?

One girl on the board has a daughter named Bronwen Eliza. Lately I'm in love with the name Bronwen. :P

7. Favorite Classics?

I think all my favorite names are classics. ;) Seriously. At least, the ones I would actually use.

8. Names you love because of literary figures, or television characters?

Charlotte (Charlotte's Web and The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle), Agatha (from a TV movie), female names from LOTR, Hermione (Harry Potter), Ramona and Beatrice (from Ramona Quimby), Therese (my patron saint), and I love Bible names :P

9. What names did you like as a child?

Martin, Agatha, Bethany

10. What caused you to like names then?

Not really sure. I have always liked naming things: story characters, dolls, stuffed animals, etc. These three are the ones I remember saying I wanted to use for my own kids. Not sure where Martin came from, Agatha is from that darn tv movie, and Bethany is sort of after my grandmother (her name is Betty).

11. How do they compare to names you like now?

I can't stand Martin anymore. I still like the other two, although I think now I'd lean more toward Elisabeth than Bethany.

12. If you had to use one now which would you use?

Agatha. ;)

13. Predict the future. Do you think you will still like the names you like now five years from now? Ten years? Further into the future?

Well, I tend to see most of the names I like as timeless classics that never go out of style. (Others may disagree. :P) I have loved Agatha for as long as I can remember; Clara, Anna, Amelia have been on my list for a few years each too. So to answer the question, yes I think I will still like them for a long time. :)

Well, that was fun. :P Now back to your regularly scheduled day. :)
